EDUCATION OF TRADITIONAL
CHINESE MEDICINE IN BELGIUM
Wilfried LEGEIN, Rik DELIL,
Danny VAN LAETHEM, Ludo KENENS, Tjeu AQUARIUS College for Traditional
Chinese Medicine(OTCG vzw). Kerkgate 89, B 9700 Oudenaarde, Belgium.
The College for Traditional Chinese Medicine (OTCG)
was established in 1990 to offer a License of Traditional Chinese
Medicine. The college is registered by the Belgian Acupunctors Federation
(BAF).
The intent of the college is to provide an 8-year part-time academic
program in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), including the theoretical
foundation of TCM, Chinese acupuncture, Chinese herbs and Tuina
(Chinese massage and manipulations).
The College of TCM accepts applications from all persons with a
minimum of medical (doctor) or paramedical education (physiotherapist,
nurse, etc.) or equivalents (such as chiropractor).
Part-time students attend 125 hours of instruction in one year.
An 8-year part-time program means 1000 hours, which include clinical
training. There are three specialties in the college: Chinese acupuncture,
Chinese herbs and Tuina (Chinese massage and manipulations).
The program is made in cooperation with the China Academy of TCM,
after many visits to the International Acupuncture Training Center
in Beijing and Nanjing. The purpose of this training program is
to develop many medical workers who combine both Traditional Chinese
Medicine and western medicine.
The college is staffed by a number of distinguished and well-known
teachers and doctors of traditional Chinese medicine, and is considered
to be one of the major institutions in Europe in teaching TCM. The
college has set up two central clinics in Belgium, where students
can do clinical practice under the supervision of Belgian and Chinese
teachers. The college also has a library, several rooms for demonstration
and teaching, and other audiovisual facilities.
In the future, when a Belgian or European law is established, the
college will start a full-time of Traditional Chinese Medicine,
in cooperation with other European institutes.

A TREATMENT OF WHIPLASH
WITH ACUPUNCTURE, TUINA AND CHINESE HERBS
Danny VANLAETHEM, Wilfried
LEGEIN, Rick DELIL, Ludo KENENS, Tjeu AQUARIUS College for Traditional
Chinese Medicine(OTCG vzw) kerkgate 89-9700 Oudenaarde, Belgium.
Aim: "Whiplash" of the neck is a controversial
term. Symptoms attributed to this syndrome are vaguely described,
the etiology is badly explained, the mechanisms of injury are poorly
understood, and the treatment is empirical at best. The use of the
term "whiplash" indicates that a diagnosis has been made.
But, this is not so; "whiplash" is merely a statement
on how the injury was caused.
Treatments usually involve repeated radiography, physical therapy,
injections, tractions, etc. In most cases the results are not successful.
Methods: We see in our clinic that the use of TCM gives good results.
We combine acupuncture, Chinese herbs and tuina to treat whiplash.
In our symposium we will give an overview of the anatomical and
physiological structures of the neck. Also the neurological and
the mechanical changes by whiplash will be introduced.
We will demonstrate also the TCM-differentiation and the affected
meridians.
Afterwards, we will propose our treatment with acupuncture, herbs
and tuina.

THE SITUATION OF MEDICAL
ACUPUNCTURE IN BELGIUM
Bruno BRAECKMAN, Michel M.
SCHOTTE
Belgian Acupunctors Federation. Visserij 155, B-9000 Gent, Belgium.
In Belgium, as in many other Western countries,
the authorities hesitate to recognize Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM) as a valuable contribution to the public health.
A possible explanation for this restraint is the ignorance about
the grand possibilities of TCM as a therapeutic concept. On the
other hand there is the overall influence of the scientific world,
which is engaged in the unlimited promotion of Western medicine,
supported by the interested pharmaceutical industry.
Well convinced that medical acupuncture has a future in Western
countries and in Belgium in particular, the Belgian Acupunctors
Federation (BAF) (i) makes the benefits of TCM known to the general
public, (ii) tries to draw the attention of the authorities to this
valuable medicine, (iii) by uniting those TCM-practitioners who
are properly educated, gives the public the security of a qualitative
treatment by her members, (iv)promotes international exchange and
contacts.
In order to offer the possibilities of TCM to the widest public
possible, the Belgian Acupunctors Federation strives for the legalization
of the practive of medical acupuncture in Belgium as well as in
the European community.
To make this legalization credible the BAF emphasizes the importance
of high quality schooling, for which comparable scientific, clinical
and pedagogical criteria should be applied as is done for the schooling
in Western medicine. The Belgian Acupunctors Federation, in consultation
with the present TCM-Colleges, develops teaching schedules to make
the transition from post-academic teaching to able-bodied academic
education, including clinical training, thesis and scientific research.
The BAF is convinced that this will appear the most fruitful way
to bear the comparison with Western medical science.

RECOGNITION OF CHINESE MEDICINE IN EUROPE
PROCOMED
Association for the Recognition and Promotion of Complementary Medicine
in Europe.
Chauss e Saint-Pierre, 97, 1040 Brussels, Belgium.
The Association for Recognition and Promotion of
Complementary Medicine in Europe (PROCOMED) is a non-profit organization
established in Brussels in October 1994 with the aim of being a
proactive force for complementary medicine at European level. With
the principal aim of promoting the recognition of complementary
medicine at European level, PROCOMED is also working to ensure a
greater understanding of the sector among decision-makers.
Bringing together all parties interested in complementary medicine,
PROCOMED has a unique role to play in ensuring that its members
are able to contribute in a positive and effective way to European-level
decisions and thus more likely to have a direct impact on their
interests. Specially, PROCOMED seeks to cooperate with the institutions
of the European Union and the Council of Europe in drafting legislation
and other measures affecting the different disciplines which constitute
the sector, e.g. improving educational standards, ensuring the free
movement of professionals, general health policy, research and consumer
protection.
PROCOMED also wishes to work closely with other bodies with an interest
in health care field to assist in the development of the best possible
health care for all Europeans.
To achieve its objectives PROCOMED will:
monitor developments at European level which affect complementary
medicine and health policy generally and provide to its members
information on a regular basis with background papers, briefings,
position papers and a regular quarterly bulletin.
defend the common interest of its members and ensure that the views
of its members are taken into consideration in all European debates
of interest by seeking consultation with relevant decision-makers.
assist its members in making direct representation to decision-makers.
facilitate cooperation among parties interested in complementary
medicine in order to provide for mutual support and, where necessary,
the information of coalitions on specific issues of interest.
organize conference and members' workshops.

EARLY DIAGNOSIS BY IRIDOLOGY
OF HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMY AND ARTERIOSCLEROSIS: PREVENT IF THERAPY
BY TCM AND FOODSUPPLY
Pierre E.J. BURSENS
Belgian Acupuncture Federation. Gentsesteenweg 10, Dendermonde 9200,
Belgium.
Iridology is a method of diagnosis dependent on
markings and structures in the iris, pigmentation and color variations,
which are bound to a definite devision of the iris into zones. By
using an irismicroscope we are making an evaluation of the histology
of the iris and depending on the structural elements we have 3 large
groups of constitutions and their subgroups, but also a group of
diathesis. One of this group is the Lipaemic diathesis, the anterior
aqueous humour-contains an increased amount of lipid toxins and
thus the grey ring organates on the inner surface of the cornea,
but the texture of the iris is also affected (depositions phase
of Reckeweg or the chaoyand phase in TCM as an indication of disease).
From the age of 30 to 50 the cholesterol ring in the irsis is present
in cholesterosis. The endogenous toxins can then cause an atheromatous
sclerosis or alternatively can have endogenous toxic effects.
Disposition to disease: hepatopathy, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism,
sclerosis, cronary sclerosis, cerebral sclerosis.
In combination with sclera phenomena and pupillotonia it is possible
to notice a disease like hypercholesterolemy arteriosclerosis in
an early stage and even prevent an illness in the preclinical stage.
Discussion and explanation of the function and effect of cholesterol
in diseases of the Lipaemic diathesis (cholesterol and Lipoproteins,
HDL, LDL, VLDL, chilomicrons and the IDL). Preventive treatment
by TCM (acupuncture and Chinese herbs) and orthomo-lecular supplement
will be explained.
