Aim: Facial paralysis is a disease that usually
is very incapacitant and creates social isolation. It is suffered
most likely by adults, and the treatment in occidental medicine
is only palliative and supportive. We try to test the results of
acupuncture and neural therapy on this disease.
Methods: Before the diagnosis by clinic, we had a group of 20 patients
from 30 to 60 years old, 10 males and 10 females. We used the following
as main points: Yuyao (Extra). Jing Ming (UB1), Chengqi (S1), Sibai
(ST2), Renzhong (Du26), Jiache (ST6), Dicang (ST4) on the affected
side and Hegu (LI4) bilaterally and other points according to the
traditional Chinese medicine syndromes. We did acupuncture once
or twice a week on 5 to 6 points in each session. If the recovery
was slow or the time suffering from the disease was long, we used
neural therapy on acupoints.
Results: After 1 1/2 months of treatment: 50% excellent (more than
80% recovery), 25% very good (between 60¡80% recovery), 20% good
(between 40¡60% recovery), and 5% poor (less than 40% recovery).
Conclusion: The results show that acupuncture and traditional Chinese
medicine are very effective in treating this disease. A good diagnosis
can be made by a skillful professional, and there is a very low
risk of side effect or iatrogenia.
