TITLE: Use of Functional MRI to Evaluate Correlation Between Acupoints and Brain Cortex
Activities: comparison Between Conventional and Electrical Acupuncture
AUTHOR(S): Li G. Chan JHM, Ma QY, Yang ES.

ABSTRACT:
Introduction: A majority of these research projects is to study the correlation between the acupuncture points (acupoints) and the corresponding brain cortices, either by conventional acupuncture and electro-acupuncture. Cho et al reported that by stimulating the vision-related acupoints(BL60, BL65, BL66, BL67) at the latcral side of the foot, neural response (i.e. high signal) was obtained at the visual cortex. In this study, we verified Cho et al acupoints using conventional acupuncture and electro-acupuncture. We stimulated the motor-related acupoints(GB34, GB35, GB37 and GB38) at the lateral side of the leg, neural response was obtained at the motor cortex. This result demonstrates that both the static and dynamic activation of the motor cortex by acupoint stimulation are consistent with toe movement stimulation observed by fMRI.

Methods: fMR imaging of the visual cortex in 13 healthy volunteers and motor cortex in 31 health volunteers was performed using a 1.5 T MR scanner with gradient strength gradient system. A quadrature head coil was used. After sagittal spin-ccho localiser images were acquired, functional MR imaging was performed using single-shot gradient-echo version of echo planar pulse sequence with the following scan parameters: TR, 3000ms; TE 60 ms; flip angle, 90¡Æ, matrix, 64 x 128; FOV, 24cm x 24cm ;slice thickness, 6.0mm; inter-slice gap, 1.0mm; The 30 second activation period was alternated by 30 second rest period. First, the functional MRI was performed with visual activation using light-emitting diodes (LED) flashing with a frequency of 8 Hz and with toe movement. The functional MRI was then repeated with conventional acupuncture and electroacupuncture at the following acupoints(BL60, BL65, BL66 and BL67) located in the lateral aspect of the foot and the motor-related acupoints (GB34, GB35, GB37 and GB38) at the lateral side of the leg. Finally, T1-weighted spin-echo images of the same location were acquired.

Results: The activated pixels in the primary visual cortex (V1) and secondary visual cortex (V2 and V3) created by visual activation correlate well with those created by both conventional acupuncture and electroacupuncture. The activated pixels in the motor cortex created by toe movement correlate well with those created by electroacupuncture.

Discussion: This result demonstrates that both the static and dynamic activation of the visual and motor cortex by acupoint stimulation are consistent with LED flashing and toe movement stimulation observed by fMRI.

Conclusion: Functional MRI can be used to evaluate correlation between acupoints and brain cortex activities.

Key words: Visual/motor Cortex activities, activated pixels, functional MRI scan.

TITLE: Discussing some Questions of Facial Paralysis Treatment

TITLE: Discussing some questions of facial paralysis treatment
AUTHOR(S): Writen by Dr. Li Rui

ABSTRACT:
This paper talked deeply about some confusing problems during the treatment of facial paralysis, according to the author's rich clinic experience. It has a great value in theories and clinic.
Analyzing from the etiology and pathogenesis, the facial paralysis belongs to deficiency mixed with excess syndrome. This syndrome mainly belongs to the empty and deficiency of the meridian and collartals, and insufficiency of the Qi, blood, and body fluid, failure to nourish the collartals and muscle region at the face. All the reasons, such as yin deficiency of both liver and kidney or overstrain, over-consume the Yin-Blood, to cause the hollow and deficiency of the collartals of Yangming and Shaoyang, then affected by the exterior pathogenic factors, can cause this problem.
During the treatment, the doctor should pay more attention to the Ren and Du meridians, regulate the Qi of both Yin and Yang. The Ren and Du meridians, belong to the eight extra meridians, have the function to restore the qi blood and regulate the excess and deficiency of the twelve regular meridians, and dominate the yin and yang of whole body. So the points of Ren and Du meridians can be used to regulate the qi and blood of the twelve regular meridians, tonify the deficiency and reduce the excess. Shuigou(DU26) and Chengjiang (RN24) points both together have the function of keeping balance of excess or deficiency on the both side of the check.
Analyzing the pathogenic, the doctor should not use moxibustion too much, because the facial paralysis is the syndrome of the deficiency of the body fluid and empty of the collaterals. The numbness and stiffness of the face of the patient is due to the deficiency of the yin failure to carry the yang, and the yang fail to defend to exterior, so when the exogenous wind and cold attacks the meridians and collaterals, and cause the stagenation of the meridian Qi and blood. The principal of Treatment is regulate the Qi and blood and reduce and expel the wind and cold at same time. If the doctor gives the moxibustion too much, of cause, the moxibustion expel the cold and get recover, but after that, the deficiency of the qi and blood of the collaterals will get more severe, and the deficiency of yin and excessive yang will damage the blood and produce wind, the result is the spasm and convulsion of the facial muscle. Long time later, the deficiency of the blood failure to nourish and get the atrophy.
The local treatment also is necessary depend on the disease area and meridians. Meanwhile, different needling skill is asked for the disease course. For the acute cases, the exogenous pathogenic wind and cold attack the meridians, and the deep acupuncture is needed at this time. For the chronic cases, the antipathogenic factor damaged already, and the pathogenic factor also weak, so the pathogenic factor go to the collaterals of the surface of the body, then the sallow acupuncture and bleeding is allowed to regulate the collaterals. And acupuncture the left side for treating the right side problem also used.

ABSTRACT:
Introduction: To explore aural acupuncture and Luweidihuang Wan Jiawei (LWJ) prevention and treatment of PMO (Postmenopausal Osteoporosis) in ovariectomized rats and their acting mechanism, so as to discover one possible way of replacement of HRT for prevention and treatment of PMO.

METHODS: According to their weight, sixty ¡ªsix 6-8-month-old female SD rats were randomly divided into six groups: pseudooperation group (POG), model group (MG), aural acupuncture group (AAG), Chinese herb group (CHG), aural acupuncture and Chinese herb group (AHG), and estrogen group(EG). Except for the POG, all the groups were ovariectomized. After the operation, AAG, CHG, AHG, EG were treated respectively with aural acupuncture, LWJ, aural acupuncture and LWJ, and estradiol benzoas. Three months later, the rats were killed and BMC and BMD assays of the right femur of the rats were performed. Also examined was serum E2, BGP, PTH, CT of the rats. The values of all groups were then compared to each other.

RESULTS: The values of AAG, CHG, AHG and EG were significantly higher than those of MG., but the values for AAG, CHG, AHG, EG showed no significant difference when compared with those of POG, yet there was no significant difference when the values of AAG, CHG, AHG were compared with those of EG.

DISCUSSION : Both aural acupuncture and LWJ can promote BMC and BMD in ovariectomized rats, so they can probably be used to prevent and treat PMO. Their mechanism may be the promotion of serum estrogen levels in ovariectomized rats, they also decreased serum PTH level and increased serum CT level. The final effects were the depression of bone resorption, the increase of bone reformation, and the decrease of bone reabsorption, then the imbalance of bone metabolism were adjusted.

CONCLUSION: Both aural acupuncture and Chinese herb can be used to prevent and treat PMO in ovariectomized rats, so they may be used to prevent and treat PMO clinically.

TITLE: Clinical and Experiment Research on Multi-Infarct Dementia Treated by Acupuncture
AUTHOR(S): Liu Qingguo

ABSTRACT:
In this thesis, the author made a systematic research on treating wind stroke with dementia with acupuncture from theoretical study, clinical observation and experimental study.
From a series of studies, the following conclusions were reached.
a) Wind stroke with dementia belongs to the category of mental disorders in TCM, Its focus is in the brain, and the characteristic of its pathomechanism is the dysfunction of the original spirit due to the lower body vacuity and upper body repletion. The lower body vacuity refers to the vacuity of the liver and kidney, while the upper body repletion refers to wind-phlegm and stasis.
b) It was showed that the treatment has a good effect in treating MID. In acupuncture group, the total effective rate was 91.3%, and cure rate was 39.13%. The average score of HDS was increased, the average scores of FAQ and injured nerve function were decreased, and the myodynamia of the affected limbs was improved, which were obviously superior to what in the western medicine group.
c) It was showed in the acupuncture group that the blood serum contents of TC, TG, LDL and ApoA100 were decreased, while the blood serum contents of HDL, ApoA1, and the values of HDL/TC, HDL/LDL were increased. Which suggested that acupuncture may adjusting the condition of lipodystrophia of the patients with MID; It was also indicated that in the acupuncture group whole blood viscosity, blood plasma, K value of blood sedimentation equation and the rigid index of red blood cell were significantly decreased. Which suggested that acupuncture treatment may reduce the high viscosity of blood so as to take action of removing blood stasis, dispelling phlegm, and clearing and activating the channels and collaterals.
d) It was showed that after the treatment the latent period of P300 even-related potential was shortened and the wave amplitude was gone up, and the shortening of the latent period of P300 event-related potential had a positive correlation with the increasing of the average score of HDS. In the detection of BEAM, it was showed that power values of the frequency bands were reduced while the frequency bands were increased. The results suggested that the acupuncture may improve cerebral blood flow and the metabolism of cerebral cell, provacate the activity of cerebral cell, thus improved the function of the brain. This conclusion provided a scientific basis for the viewpoint of the treatment may supplement the liver and kidney, fortify the brain, regulate spirit and boost intelligence.

TITLE: 26 Cases of Ureteral Calculus Treaded by Acupuncture
AUTHOR(S): He Puren Qu Yanhua

ABSTRACT:
Purpose: Observation of action of acupuncture on ureteral calculus.
Treatment method: Selection of acu-points: Zhongfeng(LR4), Ligou(LR5), Tianshu(ST25), Shuidao(ST28) Guanyuan(RN4), Sanyinjiao(SP6), Shuiquan(KI5), Manipulations: the Zhonfeng(LR4) and Ligou(LR5) was used "dragon-tiger alternately fight", that was supplement yang in nine times, then draining yin in six times, afterwards arrival of qi, others of points with common manipulation.
Result: In the 26 cases, the patients' pain was stopped by one time acupuncture were 16 cases; by two times was 6 cases ; by three times was 1 case; by eight times was 1 case. 2 cases had over not pain. The patients whose the stones were ejected were 21 cases. The ejection rate was 80.8%.
Discussion and Experience: The ureteral calculus is one kind of strangury patterns, its common symptoms were distending pain or megalgia at one side of lumbus or lateral lower abdomen, dragging pain at lateral lower abdomen, urodynia, dysuria or stopping urinnation, additional symptoms of qi stranguria. The doctors of TCM think of the stranguria due to kidney vacuity and damp-heat brewing in lower warmer. We held the three key link of formation of calculus, that were liver, spleen and kidney; thus we have suggested the basic principles of treating ureteral calculus are regulating the qi dynamic, bank up the spleen and kidney, free the waterways. According to the basic principle, the relationship of the channel course and the position of the pain, we have selected the Ren Channel, the Liver Channel of Foot-Jueyin, the Kidney Channel of Foot-Shaoyin, the Spleen Channel of Foot-Taiyin and Its exterior-interior Stomach Channel of Foot-Yangming with more qi and blood. In treatment, we put the points of liver channel in an important position to regulate qi dynamic. Held this key link, the others of trouble are easy to resolve, thus there was a certain action of relieve pain in 26 cases of patients treated with Zhongfeng(LR4) and Ligou(LR5). In manipulation, we adopted the "dragon-tiger alternately fight" on Zhongfeng (LR4) and Ligou(LR5) in all 26 cases. This manipulation has a strong action, but it doesn't damage body's vital-qi, it has a very good function of analgesia and discharge of calculus.

We reproduced models of acute cerebral hemorrhage in pure wister rats by injecting in arterial blood of itself, Treated by acupuncturing Baihui through TaiYang. Appraised the adjusting effection of acupuncture on immune function by contrasting TNF-¥á in the cerebrospinal fluid, serum, nerve tissue with the controlled experiment. Result: The expression of TNF-¥á in the cerebrospinal fluid, serum, nerve tissue of the acupunctured group was low-grade obviously compared to the controlled group in Two hours, twenty four hours, three days, seven days, forteen days after in jecting arterial blood into the brain. Especially in two hours, twenty four hours and three days. Between the two groups. P<0.05. The density of TNF-¥á in the cerebrospinal fluid achieved the peak value in twenty four hours after injecting blood. In the acupunctured group: 2.47Pg/ml. In the controlled group: 3.42Pg/ml. In the normal group:1.23 Pg/ml. The density of TNF-¥á in the serum achieved the peak value in three days after injecting blood. In the acupunctured group: 1.52Pg/ml. In the controlled group: 1.98Pg/ml. In the normal group: 1.04Pg/ml.
Conclusion: 1. Acupuncture can inhibit the production of TNF-¥á in nerve tissue induced by cerebral hemorrhage. 2. Acupuncture can inhibit the production of TNF-¥á in cerebrospinal fluid at different time after hemorrhage, especially in the peak period at the first 24 hours and during the continued peak phase from 24 hours of to 72 hours. 3. Acupuncture can make the production of TNF-¥á in serum stable.
Acupuncture in brain points can efficiently inhibit the production and release of TNF-¥á induced by hemorrhage, regulate the immune function, decrease the damage resulted from hepersensitivity and inflammation following cerebral hemorrhage. Acupuncture in brain points has obvious protecting and adjusting effection to the damagement of immune function after cerebral hemorrhage.

TITLE: The Discovery of new channel along meridians for transporting materials and energy with low flow resistance and cardio-dynamics
AUTHOR(S): Meng Jing-bi, Tian Jia-he

ABSTRACT:
In "Exploring the Sectrets of the Image Display of the Fourteen Meridians¡ªThe Research on the Conduits System along Meridians for Transporting Extravascular Small Molecules", written by these two professors. Professors Meng and Tian, they summarized the methodological research with the techniques of neuclear medicine for three years, and conformed that the images of the linear migration of 99m TC after injecting into points on the fourteen meridians basically has nothing to do with nerves and lymph vessels and differs from blood vessels, but correspond with the courses of meridians described in "Internal Classic". The special significances are that: In six meridians of foot, only urinary bladder meridian and the liver meridian appear the image of urinary bladder around external genitals, the other four meridians without such image and differ from sciatic nerve and femoral artery. Therefore, it is believed that each of the six meridians of foot has it is own course. Though there are no longitudineal nerves and blood vessels along the anterior median line, while appears the course of Ren meridian, the female(yin) ascending upwards and the male(yang) descending downwards. After injecting 99m TC into points of meridians of vital monkeys, the 99m TC diffuses over the whole body rapidly. But Immediately injecting 99m TC into monkey's acupoint after death no migration of 99m TC is appeared. Circular cutting of the skin of proximal end of the limb over 2.5cm, the migration of 99m TC appears as accumulation-broken segment-remigration. It is further proved that meridian is transmit in layer of subcutaneous connective tissue, so it is pointed out in "Jing Mai" that Meridians are lying in the boundary between muscles, too deep to be observed.
Passing through the repeated research on the image display of the fourteen meridians on more than 1400 cases as well as dogs, rabbits and monkeys, the objective existence of the fourteen meridians has been verified. We consider this is a new discovery, taking the heart as motive power, the connecting conduits of tissuse space system with low flow resistance, along the fourteen meridians for small molecules transportation. But whether the fourteen meridians possess the conduits of information transmission or not are waiting for further research and demonstration. The authors wish to research this subject cooperatively with the specialists at home or on abroad.

AUTHOR(S): Zhang Weibo, Li Hong, Tian Tuying, Wu Xijing

ABSTRACT:
AIM: To observe the influence of acupuncture on hydraulic resistance along meridians and consider the mechanism of acupuncture on peripheral regulation
METHOD: A hung saline bottle was connected to a pressure transducer which in turn approached to a infector needle with wick inside. The hydraulic resistance(HR) in tissue was positively related with the pressure. By two of such device, the HR on both low HR point along gallbladder meridian and nearby high HR places as control points were measured before and after acupuncture the Guangming(G37). The experiment was carried on the legs of 10 healthy people. Before the acupuncture, the mean HR on low HR point and control point were measured respectively. The acupuncture was then given with one minute manipulating and eight minutes retained. The HR on both points were measured again eight minutes after withdrawing the needle. Three different manipulations of acupuncture, reinforcement, reduction and uniform reinforcement-reduction(uniform), were given to each subjects at different days with the measured points a little different either.
RESULT: As the HR in three manipulations had no significant difference each other by one way ANOVA test (P>0.05), before and after acupuncture, the three groups of data can be summated and the HR were compared before acupuncture and after acupuncture with test. The result showed that the HR on low HR points before acupuncture was 1.84¡¿107dyn¤ýs¤ýcm-5(SD=2.6) and decreased significantly (P<0.05) to 0.73¡¿107dyn¤ýs¤ýcm-5(SD=0.97) after acupuncture. HR on control points before acupuncture was 3.29¡¿107dyn¤ýs¤ýcm-5(SD=2.6) which was significantly higher(P<0.05) than HR in low HR points. It also decrease to 2.18¡¿107dyn¤ýs¤ýcm-5(SD=2.48) after acupuncture but no significantly decreased(P>0.05).
DISCUSSION: The result indicated that acupuncture can reduce the HR on low HR points along meridians which allow more fluid flow along meridians according to the Darcy's law. This increase of fluid flow may have important effects, such as clearing out pain-making substance that make pain release. The study gave a scientific translation to the "dredging meridian" in traditional Chinese medicine.

ABSTRACT:
Forty patients of insomnia (male 9 and female 31) were treated with acupuncture by "Yin-Yang-Qi-Blood" Point Prescription, and were contrasted with the drug therapy group of 36 cases (male 11 and female 25). Of these cases, their age ranged from 18 to 65 years(43.88¡¾25.70), and their course of disease from 2 months to 8 years.
Methods:
Taking the main points of yin channels: Qihai, Zhongwan, Tanzhong, Sanyinjiao(double) and Neiguan(double); the points of yng channels: Baihui, Shenting, Fengfu, Dazhui and Hegu (double); the "Qi" point: Tanzhong and Qihai; and the "Blood" point: Xuehai, Sanyinjiao(double) and Taichong(double).
Taking the back-shu points or source points of the abnormal channels in accordance with the symptoms as the conjugated points.
(1) Deficiency of Qi and blood in the heart and spleen: Xinshu and Pishu;
(2) Breakdown of the normal physiological coordination between the heart and the kidney: Xinshu and Shenshu;
(3) Timidity due to insufficiency of qi and deficiency of blood of the heart: Xinshu and Danshu;
(4) Hyperactivity of the liver-yang: Ganshu and Taichong.
All the patients were punctured once a day with twisting and rotating method rapidly (scalp acupuncture with 200 r/m) with uniform reinforcing-reducing method for 30 minutes. One course of treatment consisted 3 weeks.
The drugs used in the drug therapy group was Tabellae Estaolami 2mg, given before going to bed once daily for 3 weeks.
Results:
The cure rate, effectual rate and total effective rate of the acupuncture group were 40%, 35% and 87.5% respectively, while these of the drug therapy group were 27.78%, 22.22% and 86.1%, and there was no evident difference between the two groups (P>0.05). In the sleep quality, morning awakening and somatic condition of the daytime, the former were better than the latter. The follow-up survey after treatment showed that 35 cases of the acupuncture group were effective and 2 cases recurred, and 8 cases of the drug therapy group produced dependence, the incidence rate was 22.2%.
Discussion:
This method can make yin and yang in equilibrium, promote blood circulation, regulate the function of vegetative nerve, provoke the extensive inhibition of the cerebral cortex, and then can cure the insomnia.

ABSTRACT:
Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Neuritis belongs to the disease "myoalgia" or "cutaneoalgia" in TCM. We treated the disease quite effectively by the plum-blossom-like needle.
Method:
1)Treat group: knock around the waist, sacrum part and the trouble part by the plum-blossom-like needle. Take mainly the points along the Du channel and the three yang channels of Foot. Control the rate of plucking puncture in 80 punctures per 1 minute. The advantage of this method is that by using the impulsive force and reverberatory force in acupuncture, according the condition, age and the patients' constitution. The density of knocking puncture should let the pinpoint connect next to next. Knocking the channel from up to down in turns and then Stimulating each channel three times.
2) Control group: take some vitamin and routinely medicine.

ABSTRACT:
We researched on secondary essential hypertension in clinic with music-electroacupuncture and have got notable curative effect.
Methods: The main points of Baihui (GV20), Quchi(LI11) (double), Hegu(LI4) (double), Zusanli(ST36) (double) and TaiChong(LR3) (double) were selected, and in accordance with the symptoms, Yinlingquan(SP9) (double) were added to the Hyperactivity of the liver-yang and Taixi(KI3) (double) to the hyperactivity of Yang due to yin deficiency conjugated points. After the needling reaction arriving, the therapeutic instrument of music-electroacupuncture was connected with for 20 minutes, and the intensity of the music-like current depended on what one can bear. And meanwhile the patients listened to the music from earphone.
The same points as the treating group were selected in the contrast group with G6805 electroacupuncture apparatus for 20 minutes too at a time, and successive wave of 20Hz was adjusted. The patients in two groups were all given treatment once daily for 30 days.
Results: The therapeutic effect in treating the hyperactivity of the liver-yang and hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency of the secondary essential hypertension was notable and the blood pressure was lowered markedly after the music-electroacupuncture (P<0.01) with the total effective rate of short-term being 94.1%, and it was better than the contrast group in the improvement of primary symptoms and can drop the blood total cholesterol to a certain degree.
Discussion: Music-like waves are composed of many kinds of sine waves and harmonious waves, and their frequency and amplitude change at random constantly, which can eliminate the adaptability in the treatment of pulse-electroacupuncture. With the patients listening to the music at the same time, so the better curative effect can be gained.
The music-electroacupuncture can balance yin and yang of the organism, regulate the content of substances of vessel activity (angiotensin, endothelin, nitrogen monoxide etc.), expand or contract less the blood vessels, and at last make the blood pressure lower.

ABSTRACT:
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is the common disease due to gastrointestinal dysfunction in the internal medicine. Treatment simple by medicine can't control the condition white acupuncture combining with poin injection medicine has an obvious and steady effect. According to the clinical situation, the disease is divided into three TCM-Syndromes: the Stasis of Dampness TCM-Syndromes (A type). Hyperactivity of the liver and Insufficiency of the Spleen TCM-Syndromes (B type). Insufficiency of the spleen and Insufficiency-Cold of the Intestine TCM-Syndromes (C type).
Method: After local sterilization, puncture Taichong (Liv 3), Zusanli(S 36), Sanyinjiao(Sp 6), Tianshu(S 28) in both sides. After lifting, thrusting, twirling and rotating, retaining the needle and waiting the arrival of Qi, Maintain the needing sensation to let it reach deep into the abdomen as possible as we can. Manipulate the needle per 10 minutes, retain the needle for 40 minutes. After withdraw the needle, cup the point-Ganshu(B 18) until local congestion.
Instance of adjunct points: With cupping the Shenque (Ren 8) for diarrhea and tenesmus, with Qimen(Liv 4) for constipation, with Xingjian(Liv 2) and Yanglingquan (G 34) by reducing methods for nervous and irritable patient, after all that take point injection with vitamine BI 100mg in Zuanli(S 36)and Tianshu(S 28) by turns(each point 1ml), 10 days a course of treatment.

The observation of clinical effect indicated that the effect in (C type) was more obvious than the other two types.
Discussion: In TCM the pathogeneses of Irritable Intestinal Syndrome is the combination of Deficiency and Excess Syndrome, the combination of intermingled insufficiency and excess syndrome. In order to relieve the depressed liver-Qi, puncture the points along the liver channel of Foot-Jueyin, such as Taichong (Liv 3), Xingjian(Liv 2) and Ganshu(B 18). Invigorate the spleen to clear away the dampness. Tianshu(s 28) is the Front-Mu point of the large intestine channel, it has the double function of regulating the gastointestinal-Qi. Study reported that puncture Zusanli(S 36) would improve dysfunction of motilin secretion. Shenque (Ren 8) which genuine Qi aggregate at is the origin of the vital activities of the human body. If combine the points above during treatment, it can strengthen vital-Qi and disperse the pathogenic factors, regulating the Yin and Yang.

ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Zusanli(ST36) is an important point of the Stomach Meridian, there are many reports on the effects of the ST36 to treat stomach diseases. We want to know whether the mechanisms of stimulating ST36 is in close relation with the pathway of the Stomach Meridian, whether ST36 is able to influence the function of other viscera except stomach. Answering these two questions would make the understanding the mechanisms of the effect of the ST36 more clearly and more perfectly.

Purpose: To probe the mechanism of the effects of acupuncture of ST36, and the relationship between the Stomach Meridian and stomach as well as other viscera.

Method: Making the background departed from the normal steady condition, of the electrogastrogram(EEG) and heart rate by administering. Araceanisodamine Hydrochloride by regularity and durative intravenous injection with transfusion pump. The volunteers were divided into three groups randomly:
1. Control group (administering Araceanisodamine Hydrochloride alone).
2. ST36 group (administering Araceanisodamine Hydrochloride and stimulating ST36).
3. NonST36 group(administering Araceanisodamine Hydrochloride and stimulating on the point 2 cm lateral from ST36).
each group has some 14 cases.
The changes of electrogastrogram and heart rate were taken as the indices of the acupuncture effects. Comparing the effects of acupuncture between the ST36 group and the nonST36 group.

Results:
1. After administering Araceanisodamine Hydrochloride the percentage of normal slow waves (PNSW) of the frequency domain of electrogastrogram were decreased and the heart rates

B-63.
were increased obviously in control group.
2. The PNSW has been found to be less decreased or increased in the two acupuncture groups. But in the ST36 group the PNSW was large markedly than the nonST36 group.
3. The heart rate was slowed down in both of acupuncture groups to compare with the control group. Though in the ST36 group the slowdown of the heart rate was a little more than in the nonST36 group, there was no significant deference between the two.
To sum up, ST36 group has an effect to regulate the stomach function more obviously than nonST36 group: and both ST36 group and nonST36 group has the same effect to reduce the quickened heart rate.

Discussion: PNSW is a quantitative assessment of the regularity of the gastric slow wave, larger the PNSW the better regularity the stomach movement. The results show the both acupuncture groups can increase the PNSW which were decreased by administering Araceanisodamine Hydrochloride. The increasement of PNSW of ST36 group was more remarkable than that of nonST36 group. This result show that acupuncture of ST36 has a stronger effect on the stomach function than acupuncture of nonST36 point.
The differentia of the points of the two acupuncture groups is that the point ST36 is on the pathway of the Stomach Meridian and the point of nonST36 is 2 cm apart from the pathway of the Stomach Meridian. It is suggested that the path of the Stomach Meridian may has some particular factor related to the stomach. This result correspond with the description of the relationship between Meridian and viscera in the theory of TCM.
Both acupuncture groups has the same effect of decreasing the quickened heart rate. It seems the regulation effect of heart rate in both acupuncture group bear no direct relation to the pathway of the Stomach Meridian.
In conclusion there may be two mechanisms in the effect of acupuncture on ST36, on is referable to the pathway of the Stomach Meridian, the other seems to be the common response to the acupuncture stimulation.
The detailed observation should be make sequentially.

ABSTRACT:
Introduction: ST36 is an important point of the Stomach Meridian it has been showed that ST36 has a function of regulation to the stomach, but whether the stomach is the only organ which ST36 can regulate? This question deal with the issue of the one point being able to regulate the function of multiorgan, and the theory of the special relation between one Meridian and one organ.
Because only under the state of departure the effect of acupuncture which can make the departure resumed can be showed, the background of the departure in electrogstrogram and heart rate was to first made before acupuncture to observe the effect of acupuncture. After the background has been made the effects of acupuncture of ST36 on electrogastrogram and heart rate were observed synchroniologically. The results of the observation would conduce to the understanding the mechanism of the effects of acupuncture and the relationship between Meridians and Viscera.
Methods:
1. Making the departure background of the electrogstrogram and heart rate quick by administering. Aracccannisodanune Hydrochloride thought iv in two dosages (large dosage group and small dosage group) to made the the background of the departure in electrogstrogram and heart rate in two degrees on volunteers
2. Then the effect of acupuncture on ST36 of regulation to the departure of electrogstrogram and heart rate on the each background was observed and compared with eacher other. The index of electrogstrogram were from the frequency domain of it, the indices choosed there are: power of total power spectrum(PTP): Percentage of normal slow waves (PNSW) and heart rate

AUTHOR(S): JIANG XIAN QIU

ABSTRACT:
TREATMENT METHODS
Acupuncture treatment should be carried out after sloping pulling treatment.
1. Sloping pulling treatment
Treatment principle: Relax muscles, widen the vertebral clearance, and reduce the spinal core.
Treatment method: Ask the patient to be prostrate, rolling, rubbing, pressing the patients waist, to relax muscles, widen the vertebral clearance, invigorate the circulation of blood, and relieve pains. Then ask the patient to be on his side, a little bit bending of his waist, put one of his lower limbs stretch straighr, on which the other lower limb is bending, Support his buttocks with one hand, and support his shoulder with the other hand, both hands give hard push on opposite directions simultaneously to twist his waste twice, once to the right and once to the left, with the sound of crack. Pull the affected part of the patients body at first, and then pull the healthy part. Let the spinal core being reduction.
2. Acupuncture treatment
Treatment principle: Stimulate the circulation of the blood, cause the muscles and joints to relax, and stop pains.
Acupuncture points: shen yu, da chang yu, huan tiao, cheng fu, yin men, fengshi, wei zhong, cheng shan, zu san li, xuan zhong..
Acupuncture methods: One course of daily treatment consists of 10 times, each time exert even strength on needles and keep the needles for 15-20 minutes.
Have a rest of 2 days after the completion of this course, then continuously start with the next course.

ABSTRACT:
The study was to determine the effect of damage to noradrenergic nerves in hippocampus on the action of anti-inflammatory and immune regulation of moxibustion, thus to probe into the mechanism of moxibustion in central regulation. Models of adjuvant arthritis (AA) in rats were made, and microinjection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into hippocampus was given, and then changes in vola circumference, index of chest and spleen, II-6, II-2 after moxibustion were observed. Results show that moxibustion group present obvious effects of anti-inflammatory and immune regulation, (p<0.01 comparing with control group), and the effects were partly blocked by the damage to noradrenergic nerves in hippocampus (p<0.05). It indicates that hippoeampus may be an important portion relating to the central information integration of moxibustion treatment, and hippocampus-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) system may be a neurohumoral route in the action of anti-inflammatory and immune regulation of moxibustion.

ABSTRACT:
An analysis of the clinical data indicates that a very high effective rate is obtained by combining Acupuncture therapy with Homeopathy. Homeopathy is used as a medicine, an infinitesimal dose of a substance derived from the animal, vegetable or mineral kingdom by methods that result in dilutions and potentiations. The action of the Homeopathic medicine, just as Acupuncture therapy, is to activate biochemical reactions which last over a certain period of time, without any of the side effects. The integration of these two types of Medicine, Homeopathy and Acupuncture, seems to represent a safe and effective therapeutic method.

AUTHOR(S): By Li Handong, deputy directy of Traditional Chinese Medicine Buream of Guandong Province

ABSTRACT:
Acute lumbar sprain is one of the commonly seen diseases in motor system, belongs to the category of "lumbago caused by blood stagnation" in traditional Chinese Medicine. From May 1990 to May 1999, according to the criteria of diagnosis and therapeutical effect from "the Clinical Research Guiding Principle for New Medicine (Chinese Medicine) Treating pain of the waist and the lower extremities (by the Administration of Medicine, the Health Department of P.R. China, 1998), we applied eye acupuncture in treating acute Jumbar sprain for 58 cases. The result was as following: 30 cases were cured, 11 cases had remarkable effect, 11 cases were effective, 6 cases were ineffective. The remarkable effective rate was 70.69% and the total effective rate was 89.66%.
Selection of Points: mainly selecting urinary bladder area in eye acupuncture adding kidney area for patients with pain in the middle of the lower back, adding gall bladder area for patients with limitation in turning their waist to two sides or for patients with pain from the waist radiating along the lateral side of the lower limb, or adding liver area for patients with lumbago and limitation to bend the waist up and down.
Manipulations: Patients adopt a sitting posture. After locating the points and the routine sterilization, use 0.5 or 1 Cun stainless steel acupuncture needles with the size of No. 30. The Literature showed that there as a special relation between twelve regular channels and the eye acupuncture area which can be used to reflect and treat the disorders of the zangfu and channels. We mainly selected the urinary bladder area and kidney area which are related to the waist to treat acute lumbar sprain and had better curative effect. It usually takes about 1 to 5 minutes for acupuncture treatment to get effect. The clinical practice shows that eye acupuncture treatment has a good pain-relieving effect for acute bumbar sprain.

ABSTRACT:
Diabetes is a kind of common endocrine metabolic disease. The basic pathologic change is sugar, fat, protein and subsequent vitamin, water and electrolyte metabolic disorder caused by relative or absolute deficiency of insulin. Its character is hyperglycemia or hyperglycosuria. Clinically there may be no symptom at early stage. Hyperdiuresis, polyphagia and polydipsia symptoms appear at symptomatic stage with syndrome of lassitude, obesity or emaciation, ketoacidosis may occur in serious cases. Common complications and concomitant disease include acute infection, pulmonary tuberculosis, atherosclerosis, kidney and retina microangiopathey, neuropathy, and so on.
Pathogeny of diabetes is divided into two categories, primary and secondary diseases. Primary disease accounts for the overwhelming majority whose reason is not clear, secondary disease accounts for the minority, although the reason is clear, there are still many problems not expounded in pathogenesis. Primary diabetes is then divided into juvenile disease and adult disease according to age of onset. Since the coming out of insulin, great progress has been achieved in nosogenesis, pathophysiology and treatment of both primary and secondary diseases. Especially, after determining plasma Langerhans' islands concentration and function of pancreatic island Bcell releasing insulin, absolute and relative insulin deficiency as pathogenesis of these two categories of diabetes has been futher confirmed. But the pathogeny causing absolute and relative deficiency of insulin is still being studied up

TITLE: The Rapid Twirling of Insertion in Acupuncture- The "Flying Needle" Method of Insertion
AUTHOR(S): Chen Quanxin

ABSTRACT:
Needle manipulation is a very important means of acupuncture treatment. As for needle insertion, there are three kinds of techniques, inserting the needle with fingers holding he tip of the needle, inserting the needle while twirling its handle, inserting the needle through a plastic tube. The first method has the advantages of swift insertion and little pain, but will easily contaminate the needle. Where as the second and the third methods have the advantages of non-polution, but the insertion is slower and will cause some trouble if patients (as children) doesn't cooperate well.
The rapid twirling method of insertion is formed by absorbing the advantages of many methods of insertion. Since the needle is inserted swiftly and twirling by the fingers, the penetration is forceful, and the patient feel only little pain. If the technique is mastered perectly, a sterilization, accurate, little pain and swift insertion will be obtained.
The procedure of rapid twirling method
The handle of needle is held by the thumb and the tips of index and meddle fingers of the inserting hand. The fingers of compressing hand presses the skin close to the sterilized required point, and immobilizes the local place. The thumb of inserting hand draws back, and simultaneously the middle and index fingers stretch out, thus the needle is twirled rapidly. When the needle reaches the point, the rapidly twirling needle is inserted into point by the force of wrist and fingers.
This method is especially suitable to 1 Chun needle commonly used. If a longer needle is required, a sterilizated forceps will take the place of the inserting hand.
Generally, many methods of insertion are used in clinic. I think that a good method of insertion must conform the requirements of sterilization, accuracy, little sensation of pain and swiftness.

TITLE: LINICAL RESEARCH ON MIGRAINES WITH SCALP ACUPUNCTURE

ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Migraine is a widespread, serious public health problem; Recent investigation suggests that many drugs, including Combination analgesics, 5-HT agonists, and Ergots did not had to have important roles in migraine attacks in a long period. Scalp acupuncture may be a good therapy in migraine attacks.
METHODS; 96 cases of migraine patients were divided in two groups by the time of seeking medical advice at random. Group A was treated with scalp acupuncture: Group B was treated with drug.
In this article, we set the indexes of observation; they were clinical results, Trancranial Dooppler (TCD) and other experimental indexes (such as TC, TG and FFA).
We selected the prescription as follow "from Baihui(Du 20) to Toulinqi (G 15)", "from Qubin(G 7) to Yifeng(SJ 17)". Filiform needles No. 30 were applied to puncture the points, "form Baihui(Du 20) to Toulinqi (G 15)" 2 cun horizontally; "form Qubin(G7) to Yifeng (SJ 17)" 2 cun horizontally. When needling the points after deqi, twist the needle quickly for some cycles and let the needle sensation reach the base of the eye and radiate to the vertex; we used drug as Combination analgesics, 5-HT agonists, Ergots.
RESULTS: The results indicated that most indexes of Group A were improved within a shot time, Group A did show better curative effects than Groups B (P<0.05); Group A was free from side effect and Group B had to had suffered side effect as a long period.
DISCUSSION: Migraine originated from cold and weakness of the constitution, and wrong intake of too many drugs for perspiration. So the body became weaker, thus derangement of meridian qi, obstruction of the meridian with the result of migraine. Not too many needles are advisable due to weakness, only four points are selected to activate the blood circulation, dredge the obstructed qi and promote the meridians. Thus pain stopped due to smooth flow of the meridians.
CONCLUSION: While drug therapy was discontented, scalp acupuncture was more efficacious, and well-tolerated treatment option. Acupuncture can reduce the duration and frequency of migraine severe attacks.

ABSTRACT:
Goal, observe the clinical effect on electroacupuncture of 280 cases of protrusion of lumbar intervertebral disc.
Therapy method, choose the pathologic point that between the spine horn and give the direct needling, select the point which has the same level as the spine horn which 4cm lower than the pathologic disc and give the slant needling. The needle we are using is Huatuo brand, diameter 0. 45mm and 75mm long, and after the needle reaching the deep of pathological place the percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(PENS) will be given by connecting with electroacupuncturemeter with frequency of 15 Hz. The threshold current intensity is determined by patient and the stimulation will continue 20 minutes. The treatment period is 20 days and every two patient will receive one time electroacupuncture.
Result Statistic Table:
Recuperate Partial help Failure Total

TITLE: The Experimental Research on the Regulative Action of Scalp Acupuncture to TXA-PGI, System of Patients with Acute Cerebral Hemorrhage
AUTHOR(S): Dong GulRong, Dong HongSheng and Bai Yan

ABSTRACT:
The patients were randomly divided into 3 groups of them 30 cases were the control group, 30 cases were the acupuncture treatment group (A) with the age of 61.7¡¾15.6 and 34 cases were the western medicine treatment group(B) with the age of 62.1¡¾15.7. Among the patients in the treatment group, the cases of basal segment hemorrhage in group A were 16 and those in group B were 18, while the rest in the two groups were respectively 14 and 16 with hemorrhage in other regions. There were 23 cases with hemorrhage volume from 10ml to 20ml in group A and 24 cases in group B. The number of cases with hemorrhage volume from 21ml to 30ml in the two groups were in turn 7 and 10. There were no significant difference in sex, age, disease course, disease tendency, hemorrhage region and hemorrhage volume in the two treated groups (p>0.05).
We selected Bai hui (Du 20) penetrating to Tai Yang, Feng Fu (Du 16) to Ya Men(Du15), Shen Ting (Du 24) to Shang Xing (Du 23), Feng Chi(G.B.20) to Feng Chi on the other side and so on with method of quick inserting and withdrawing needle, slight rotating and interval manipulating to apply in the acupuncture treatment group. The standard of the judgement on the curative effect and the analysis of TXB2, 6-keto-PGE1¥á was in terms of the state unitive schema.
The clinical marks of pre-treatment and post-treatment in group A were selectively 20.2 ¡¾5.6 and 5.5¡¾4.5 with obvious statistical significance (P<0.001), while those of group B were respectively 20.1¡¾7.6 and 14¡¾9.5 with no obvious statistical significance (P>0.05). The comparison between the two groups with P<0.05 indicated that the therapeutic effectiveness of group A was markedly better than that of group B. The normal level of 6-keto-PGE1¥á in blood plasma of the control group was 144.7¡¾57.18 Pg/ml. The level of them before treatment and after treatment in both of group A and B were respectively 151.2¡¾31.31, 192.3¡¾61.31 and 163.1¡¾35.11, 183.9¡¾53.01. Before treatment beith of the two groups were compared with the control one with the result of P>0.05 while the result of post-treatment was P<0.01. After treatment we compared group A with group B, we concluded P>0.05. But In group A the result of pre-treatment comparing with post-treatment was P<0.01 while that in group B was P>0.05. The level of TXB2, in blood plasma of the control group was 189.26¡¾59.36 Pg/ml. The level of them before treatment and after treatment in the rest two groups were selectively 509.3¡¾27.07, 368.5¡¾31.31 and 425.2¡¾25.61, 367.5¡¾45.11 which were all higher than the corresponding level of the control one (P<0.01). The level of TXB2, in group A reduced 27.7% comparing with that of pre-treatment (P<0.01), and the level of group B reduced 13.6% (P<0.01). The difference of the reducing rate between the two groups was 50% which showed that the effectiveness of reducing the level of TXA2, with acupuncture was remarkably better than that of western medicine. In the control group the T/G rate was 1.3. The T/G rate before treatment in the two groups were in turn 3.4 and 1.7 while those of post-treatment were 2.6 and 2. The rate of group A reduced 50% after treatment while that of group B only reduced 23.0% with the difference between them was 27%. So it proved that the regulation on T/G of group A was much better than that of group B. Such findings were due to acupuncture reducing the level of TXA2, while improving the level of PGI2, especially reducing the T/G rate which was the most important. Through this experiment we draw a conclusion that the system of TXA2-PGI2 maybe the material basis of the mechanism on treatment of cerebral hemorrhage with acupuncture.

ABSTRACT:
The change of bone damage diseases in physiology and pathology, can be summarized that the pressure stimulates the tissue and causes the change in physiology and pathology.
The pressure stimulates the pain which caused by bone joint damaged, can be summarized physical pressure, hot pressure, cold pressure and gas pressure.
The different manipulation of acupuncture can make great adjusting changes to cold pressure or hot-pressure. For example, warming needle, red-hot needling, moxibustion, pricking-bone can adjust cold pressure well, and pricking to bleed, distant needling, puncturing the painful site directly, acupuncture to the joint. Puncturing perpendicularly the painful muscle and vibrate the needle can do hot pressure well. It is good to master the way with acupuncture adjusting pressure in many bone damage diseases.

TITLE: Abstract of 20 schizophrenia treatment cases using balance stitch
AUTHOR(S):

ABSTRACT:
Method
For a few years, we have studied balance stitch to cure schizophrenia and had good curative effect, with the characteristics of brief operation, quick curative effect, and no side effect. In the clinic practice, basing the schizophrenia's characteristic of many disease types and distinct yin yang's dynamic change, we seize each disease type's cure opportunity, and in the principle of rushing down yang with filling yin or filling yang with waking up spirit and so on, we have treated more than 20 schizophrenia suffers with whole balance stitch method, grouping, contrasting and observing the sufferers for the period of treatment. The curative affect was satisfied. In cure ways, with the direction of balance stitch's theory, we chose specialize point firs: jinglie is the main point(The point lies in The Urinary Bladder Channel of Foot-Taiying, and goes up one inch of chengshan point), and xingnao is the assistant point. We sting straight the main point 2-3 inches deep with 28-size needle, and make use of inductive strong stimulate method with great range of bringing up, sticking in, twisting up and turning around. Let the sufferers feel intensive sting. Then we can inspire the body's environment controlling system energy, and mobilize nerve and channel's function with the cerebra centrum adjustment. Also we can make economy exert function of self-restoration, self-perfect and self-regulation, stage by stage, make economy in balance state in the curing aim.
After we cured with this method for three periods of the treatment, the statistic result indicates: In the sting cure group with 20 persons, there're 9 persons were healed. accounting for 45%, 6 persons obviously effected, for 30% and 5 persons looked up, for 25%; In the medicine cure group with 8 persons, there 2 persons were cured, accounting for 25, 3 persons obviously effected for 37.5% and 2 persons looked up, for 25%. Overall efficiency ratio separately accounts for 100% and 87.5%. From the cure statistic result, string cure group's efficient ratio is evidentiy higher than medicine cure group's. Balance stitch surely embodies the wonderful effect in the clinic, we can apply the method widely and make further research.

ABSTRACT:
In this subject, the author has preparated cerebral hemorrhage pattern with the method of injecting auto-arterial blood into intracerebral under stereotaxic instrument, selected Baihui-through-Taiyang, researched on the effect of electric-scalp-acupuncture with point penetration to neuronal electuric discharge, nerve transmitter, blood-brain barrler and to cellular apoptosis. Interpreted instant effect of scalp-acupuncture by neuronal electric discharge, neurotransmitter etc.
The result showed that:
1. Cerebral hemorrhage which is generated on the basis of Yin-dificiency of both liver and kidney is a complicated disease. It is a disease infecting meridians, brain and muscles. Differentiating illness and syndrome are combined to the treatment. In the course of acupuncture, the specific scalp points are the main and the others are supplementary.
2. We preparate cerebral hemorrhage pattern with the method of injection auto-arterial blood under stereotaxic instrument. The pattern can be preparated conveniently, stable and the location of bleeding part is accurate.
3. Acupuncture scalp point can instantly improve the neuron electric discharge and the impression of neurotransmitter. This probably is the mechanism of scalp acupuncture instant effect.
4. The instant improvement is not obvious to the injured blood-brain barrier of the acute cerebral hemorrhage after acupuncturing the scalp point, but after 1 week's acupuncture, the repair to the injured blood-brain barrier can be observed.
5. The instant effect is not obvious to the nerve cell apoptosis around the hematoma, but with the courses went by, good regulation can be found to the cell apoptosis of the ischemic part around the hematoma.
6. The scalp acupuncture effective treating to acute cerebral hemorrhage is manifold.
It shows that the acupuncture instant effect mechanism is realized by regulating neuronal electric discharge and neurotransimitter, It offered scientific evidence to the specific instant effect of scalp acupuncture. It also proves that scalp acupuncture can improve BBB cell apoptosis after acute cerebral hemorrhage. It is important to the cerebral hemorrhage patient's prognosis using this therapy deeply.

ABSTRACT:
What is called "Five impediment patterns_ means according to the depth of disease evil and to be divided into Skin impediment, Vessel impediment, Sinew impediment, Flesh impediment, Bone impediment, five kinds so on.
This new method is different from usual one which is divided according to the nature of disease evil. So the manipulation of acupuncture is also different.
Skin impediment mainly uses shallowly with short needling, Half needling, shallow needling and twirling needles.
Vessel impediment uses pricking the network vessel and scatter-pricking. Sinew impediment uses acupuncture to the joint and acupuncture perpendicular the painful muscle and vibrate the needle. Flesh impediment uses valley-shaped needling and parting needling. Bone impediment uses short needling and transported needling.
Five needlings also should combine with the nature of disease evil, identify patterns and select points. Only do this, can get good response.

TITLE: Study on the reform of acusector(acusector+traditional twist)
AUTHOR(S): Xia Jingqing Zhou Yuexiu Chen Yinxing

ABSTRACT:
1. Purpose: It is necessary to reform the present acusector, which is used by the way of being clipped by the clamp to be electricified to cure and has no way to replace to intricate traditional twist, thus lossing the traditional stigmata(ÚÓ, àÜ, çÊ, âËÔõ) while it is for which the acupuncture and moxibustion pays much attention to the traditional twist.
2. Method and content: The Key to do such a reform of the present acusector is to changes its electrode, which is to be made of a round metal sheet with an eyehole in the centre. A doctor can let the filiform needle insert into the skin through the eyehole and operate the needle handle by hand to practise every traditional twist while to cure with the ascusector electrified.
3. Significance of the reform: Though an easy and minor reform it is, it is of a great significance. For the new acusector after being reformed, (1)the traditional twist can be practised and both ancient and present advantages can be brought into full play at the same time to do treatment with it; (2) the twist done in the new electrode is totally different from the old one. It is a modernized enhancement by leaps and bounds rather than a simple addition capable of producing at random various delicate electromagnetic waves of unimaginable functions as a result of the interaction of both needle and outer magnetic field which is caused by means of operating the metal needle by hand to practise every twist in the outer electromagnetic field; and (3) the electromagnetic wave typical of every doctor's own can be produced because every doctor of acupuncture and moxibustion has the typical twist of his own, it is with which the features of the electromagnetic wave vary along so as to bring the individual special skill into full play on the basis of electrotherapy meanwhile to bring its advantages into full play.
4. Effect: It has been obtained by means of clinical observation under the initial study:(1) that, by practising the clinical observation to two groups of the facial paralytics, 50 cases each, one carried out with Li's twist in addition to the new acusector and the other, as the compared group, simply with the acusector, the effect is raised and the average curative course of the former is 15 days shorted than that of the latter because the Li's twist can be brought into full play in the meantime with the new acusector, and p<0.05 as a result of the statistic analysis; and (2) that the effect is really notable approved by the fact that using the traditional twist + acusector therapy for the 32 patients who failed to be cured with the latter(all are acute algetic patients, 17 cases of toothache, 12 biliary colic, 3 headache) and, as a result, of which, 15 cases of toothache, 10 biliary colic and 2 headache have been made completely remittent.

TITLE: About Research into the Mechanism of Acupuncture-moxibustion Action
AUTHOR(S): CHEN Han-ping

ABSTRACT:
On the basis of the knowledge of what mechanism means, research into the mechanism of acupuncture-moxibustion action is aimed at expounding the intrinsic ways of the related functional activity induced by acupuncture and moxibustion through acupoints and mediations. So experimental design for research, including experimental methods, and observation subjects and indices, is necessarily directed by a working hypothesis and based on the related factors and links or ways to the regulative effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on some functional activity. The purpose is to reveal their mutual relationships and expound the intrinsic ways of the related regulative effect of acupuncture and moxibustion, finally explaining the essence of the observed regulative effect of acupuncture and moxibustion.
Undoubtedly, research into the mechanism of acupuncture-moxibustion action is certainly related to the measurement of some physical and chemical indices. So far many investigations have adopted experimental indices reasonably, shown a high research level and been generally accepted by the experts at home and abroad. But is should be noticed that not a few research papers are entitled mechanism research, and in fact they only list some or many experimental indices and do not explain the intrinsic relationships among the indices and of them with the generating and developing processes of the investigated functional activities. Spending a lot of manpower, material resources and finances, however, still only reflects the effects of acupuncture and moxibustion and describes the influences on the related functional activities in addition to changes in the related symptoms and signs(in the case of treating diseases). The research results can only explain the actions of acupuncture and moxibustion at an effect (phenomenon)level and not expound them at a mechanism (essence) level, that is, the research is unworthy of the name. That lowers the quality of research and wastes resources. As a result, the researchers can not achieved the expected purpose completely. Some researchers suddenly realized the incorrect understanding and treatment only when an achievement or paper appraisal meeting was held. That is very regrettable. This is mainly because the research designers one-sidedly understand the meaning of mechanism and research into the mechanism of acupuncture-moxibustion action. Of course, there is another condition, that is, creating the erroneous impression of mechanism research and bluffing people into believing that the research level is high. Although this is a local phenomenon, it reflects interference in the research from some hairbrained mentality from one side. That is not advisable, and we should learn a lesson from it.
The author thinks that it is necessary to further discuss the problems that the title of this paper refers to and exhibit some excellent examples of mechanism research for reference and use. Discussion perse is a guide to academic research.

TITLE: Investigation on the Displaying of the Infrared Radiant Track, Along the Human Du and Ren Meridian
AUTHOR(S): Peiqing Wang, Xianglong Hu, Jinsen Xu, Baohua Wu

ABSTRACT:
In 1993, we reported the preliminary result of observation on the infrared radiant track along meridian course (IRRTM) over human body surface. The infrared radiant track was displayed by a thermal tracer (mode. 6T67) without any artificial stimulation and interference. Our results confirmed what ancient Chinese physicians described about the meridian courses, and it soon attracted the attention of many researchers in China and abroad.
Now, the further observation on the incidence of infrared radiant tracks along Du Meridian and Ren Meridian of 113 volunteers is reported as follows: A. The results further demonstrate that IRRTM was really a biological phenomenon and related to the functional regulation of human body. Under the proper conditions, the classical meridian course over human body surface could be figuratively displayed with the thermal imaging system. B. IRRTM could be seen in both of the picture of common thermal image and iso-thermal displaying image, the radiant tracks obtained coincided each other. But the result of isothermal displaying was more prominent than common thermal image. C. Cooling can abolished all the infrared radiant track over the back of human body in cold-stress test. But under the nature conditions, without any artificial stimulation or interference, the infrared radiant track along Du Meridian was recovered at first. Five to six minutes after stopping of cooling the radiant tracks along Du Meridian reappeared. D. The incidence of IRRTM along Du Meridian over the back of 113 volunteers body surface is about 77.9%, among them the long distance(travels from Dazhui to Yaoyangguan) is about 30.9%. The incidence of IRRTM along Ren Meridian (travels from Tiantu to Zhongji) over the chest and abdomen of the human body surface is about 26.6%.
The above results show that infrared radiant track along meridian course (IRRTM) is a biological phenomenon under natural condition, it can be observed on a considerable amount of the people. At present the regularity and mechanism of its appearance is further investigated.

AUTHOR(S): Wu Ji-Lun Chen Wen-Bin Jing An-Ling

ABSTRACT:
Moxibustion is an out-treatment of Chinese traditional therapy, which has a long history and attached great importance to it by famous doctors of past age. But it has many defects, such as backward heating-method, even if use electric power, which can't be used in time of power failure, or some places have no power. Mean while the effective ingredients of drugs in moxibustion may be destroied by high temperature, human's eye and nose will be fumigated by smoke. When treatment it must hold by hand, so it is not convenient to use and inefficient.
HUALUN Medicuted Moxi-bustion combines Chinese traditional moxibustion therapy with modern infrared physiotherapy, which not only using electric instead of fire, but also can stores energy. It acquired the "Best Vital Force Cup" at "The First World Traditional Medicinal"(U.S.A.) 1994.
"DUOKE" Self-Heat pad is a combination of delivery therapy and modern technology of TDP, can keep a long lasting self-heat (over 12 hrs) without power, and with a soft radiating-plate, therefore when treatment can be changed it's shape with human body and next to the skin, increasing the transderm delivery function.
Two products combine Chinese traditional moxibustion therapy with modern phsiotherapy novel design: small volume; keep and use easily; safety and reliable curative effect. It is an important creation of Chinese traditional moxibustion therapy and make a break of TDP physiotherapyeutic technology.

TITLE: Treatment of Hypochondriac Pain by Propagated Sensation along Meridians (PSM)
AUTHOR(S): Zhang Qingyu, Pei Hao, Dong Jianping, Fu Haibo

ABSTRACT:
Hypochondriac pain is to say about pain in Hypochondriac region of one of or both sides, which includes the illnesses on liver, gallbladder or pleura, intercostals neuralgia etc. We have got notable curative effect by using the special acupuncture manipulation---PSM to treat the disease.
Methods: Point Zhigou (TE6) on ill side of both sides was selected. After the needle inserted onto the point rapidly and the needling reaction arriving, pressing hand was used to block the distal part of the channel, with the needle tip toward the upper applying vibrating and flicking methods to excite the channel qi, and then massaged and tapped along the related channel from slightly to heavily, from distal to upper part, to make the channel qi propagate from Zhigou (TE6) to upper arm, shoulder and costal regions, and to make the Qi reach the affected areas (QiRA). Treatment was given twice daily.
Results: Seventy-eight cases of hypochondriac pain were treated among which 36 cases were cured by only one time, 25 cases by two times, 10 cases by three times, 3 cases by four times, 2cases by five times, and 2 cases improved.
Follow-up survey of long-term result: 28 cases of the 76 cured cases recurred 3 days after they were cured, among which there were 20 cases of acute hepatitis and 8 cases of pleurisy. All of these recurrent cases were cured finally after the treatment with both acupuncture and drugs at the same time.
Discussion: PSM and QiRA is the cream of acupuncturology, and an effective method in treating diseases. There is a saying in "Internal Classic" that if Qi reaches the affected areas quickly, the curative effect and be got quickly, while Qi dosen't reach, then ho curative effect were notable with PSM and QiRA by Zhigou on the treatment of hypochondriac pain, but to those serious patients the drugs must be used to treat the primary diseases, and then to raise the long-term curative effect.
