Acupuncture is of special therapeutic effect in treating peripheral facial paralysis disease. And there have been published many articles titled on acupuncture treatment to facial paralysis. But all of these articles have neglected the relationship between the transformation and therapeutic effect of facial paralysis the relationship between the location determination (injured area) and the degeneration determination (the post-neuro-damage degeneration degree) that affecting directly to the therapeutic effect.

Transformation of facial paralysis will generally transform in three ways: 1) Complete recovery, no sequelae left; 2)Partial recovery and certain sequelae left: 3) No-reversible condition and some quite severe sequelae remained. Anyhow, how good the transformation is and how good the therapeutic effect is depending firstly on applying the correct treatment method and secondly on the location determination and degeneration determination of the disease itself.

(1) Location determination: is to determine the location of the focus of the disease, whether it is extra-canal type or intro-canal type. If it is the intro-canal type, futher determined which section has been injured. Because the different damage location has the different therapeutic effect. Therefore the higher the plane of the injured facial nerve is, the poor the therapeutic effect is.

(2) Degeneration determination: facial paralysis no matter due to which causative factor, will manifest as various degenerative reactions of the nerve of different degree (none or mild, moderate and severe degeneration) in the first two weeks. This kind of degenerative reaction varies according to the degrees of damage. The worse damage is, the worse degeneration is, and the harder clinical recovery is. Therefore, in treating facial paralysis, apart form "location determination", "degeneration determination" also has direct restriction to the therapeutic effect.

It can be observed that, apart from whether the treatment method is correct or not, the location determination and the degeneration determination are also key factors determining how good the therapeutic effect is. But the therapeutic effects* comparison between the different location determination and the different degeneration determination, they are not comparable and they are not equal types. However many articles are revealing the analysis and statistics of therapeutic effects of treatment to the same disease but of different types, this action is not scientific at all and the conclusions are not reliable. Hence, the treatment to facial paralysis should be further explored and studied by following the development principle of the disease.
